Mesoglycan Aortic Glycosaminoglycans: Enhancing Blood Vessel Integrity

The blood vessels are the part of the circulatory system that transports blood throughout the human body. There are three major types of blood vessels:

  • Arteries:  which carry the blood away from the heart
  • Veins:  which carry blood from the capillaries back toward the heart
  • Capillaries:  which enable the actual exchange of water and chemicals between the blood and the tissues

The length of all the blood vessels in the human body is about 60,000 miles (96560 kilometers) in a child’s body and 100,000 miles (160,934 kilometers) in an adult body.  1 

Most of the blood vessels in the human body are microscopic capillaries.  Most of the capillaries are short but there are a lot of them.  There are about 40 billion (40,000,000,000) of them in the body.  2

Vascular glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs, are the natural building blocks for the tissues that create the 60,000 to100,000 mile of veins, arteries and capillaries that run throughout your body and are essential components of the endothelium and vessel wall and have been shown to be involved in several biologic functions. 

Vascular glycosaminoglycans are classified into four groups:  3

  • Chondroitin sulfate/Dermatan sulfate
  • Keratan sulfate
  • Heparin/Heparan sulfate
  • Hyaluronan

Mesoglycan, a natural GAG preparation, is a polysaccharide complex, rich in sulphur radicals with strong negative electric charge. It is extracted from porcine intestinal mucosa or cow lung or cow blood vessel (aorta) and is composed of heparan sulfate (typical content 52%), dermatan sulfate (35%), electrophoretically slow-moving heparin (8%), and variable and minimal quantities of chondroitin sulfate (5%) 

Mesoglycan is used for:  4  5

  • Treating “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis)
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis)
  • Varicose veins 
  • Leg ulcers
  • Stroke
  • Leg pain that is often experienced by people with peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Prevention of blood clots in the legs (deep venous thrombosis)
