Ecklonia Cava: A Very Potent Brown Algae

Ecklonia Cava is a natural, edible brown algae that has been found to be rich in phlorotannins, a compound found in brown algae believed to provide the plant with defense and response to resources. Phlorotannins found in ecklonia cava provide not only benefits to the plant but also the biological functions of animals.

One such benefit is its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are molecules that help prevent an individual’s cells from being damaged by free radicals that can react with an individual’s DNA or cell membrane, causing a series of cell reactions that ultimately leads to cell damage or cell death. As a result, it can help prevent diseases that often result from free radical damage and oxidative stress such as aging and age-related diseases.

It has also exhibited protection against diabetics, hypersensitivity/allergies, matrix metalloproteinase enzyme inhibition, hyaluronidase enzyme inhibition, radiation damage and so forth. A case in point is that it can help reduce the damage caused by hyperglycaemia-induced oxidative stress, a condition in which insulin resistance results in oxidative stress. This is significant for individuals experiencing diabetic complications.

In addition, Ecklonia Cava helps counter vascular inflammatory diseases by triggering anti-inflammatory effects. It is also believed to help improve physical endurance by enhancing the oxidation of glucose and decreasing the production of lactate. Furthermore, it is able to induce apoptosis in human breast cancer cells – making it a promising potential for use as a chemopreventative agent.
